Firewood for sale: N. Atlanta Tree Company on “Seasoned firewood”

As we finally enter the cooler seasons and closer to winter many people are looking to reduce their use of central heat. With a fireplace and the right firewood, you can begin heating specific rooms and even your whole home. Unfortunately, not any wood will do. Using firewood that’s laying around your home and surrounding woods will likely produce disappointing results. Today we are sharing what to look for when seeking local firewood for sale and what to do if you decide to do it yourself.

What is seasoned Firewood?

When wood is initially cut it has a moisture content of around 60%. With a high moisture content wood is hard to light, does not burn well, and often gives off an unpleasant odor. Properly seasoned firewood should have a moisture content of around 20%. To properly season firewood, we need to evaporate some of the moisture. Doing so, produces much better results. The wood burns more safely, efficiently and longer. When shopping for firewood for sale, it’s important to understand what to look for and what to do to season it yourself. The process can take over 6 months, but that can be shortened by following a few simple steps.

Split that wood

Whether you are shopping for seasoned firewood or planning to do it yourself, you need to ensure that splitting has been done or you will need to split it. Splitting wood will increase the surface area and make the pieces smaller so that they dry more quickly. Splitting should be done in the summer months, so the wood has ample opportunity to dry.

Stack that wood

Stacking wood properly outside in a dry area accelerates the drying process. It’s important when possible to stack wood in a dry spot exposed to sunlight, and away from the ground. Use a tarp when necessary to keep the wood from being exposed to ground moisture.

Check the wood starting at 4 months

Firewood will take approximately 6 months to season so if you split firewood in May you can expect to have firewood ready to burn in November. Start checking it after 4 months for optimal results.
